Filem supervillain dengan kisah asal (lain macam pula bila diterjemah), iaitu Joker kini mendominasi pencalonan Oscar.
Joker kini tercalon dalam 11 kategori untuk Oscar kali ini termasuk untuk kategori Best Picture, Best Director dan Best Actor.

Di belakang kecemerlangan Joker adalah filem berkaitan perang dunia pertama arahan Sam Mendes iaitu 1917, filem Quentin Tarantino – Once Upon a Time…in Hollywood – dan filem arahan Martin Scorsese – The Irishman – kesemuanya berjaya dicalonkan dalam 10 pencalonan.
Netflix kali ini benar benar padu apabila ada beberapa produk mereka tercalon dalam Oscar kali ini iaitu The Irishman, Marriage Story, dan dokumentari American Factory.
Netflix pasti mahu enggan mengulangi pencapaian mereka di Golden Globes, apabila mereka ada 17 pencalonan tetapi hanya membawa pulang satu trofi sahaja.
Namun begitu, pengumuman pada Isnin itu mendapat banyak kecaman daripada pengkritik.
Mereka tidak berpuas hati dengan pencalonan kali ini yang kurang kepelbagaian kaum, danmdiversiti gender untuk kategori utama.
Pengkritik juga mulai mempersoalkan dominasi oleh syarikat penstriman gergasi vs studio filem.
Joker kini menjadi filem berasaskan watak komik yang paling banyak pencalonan di dalam Oscar. Mengalahkan Joker sendiri, versi The Dark Knight pada 2008 dengan lapan pencalonan.
Setakat ini tiada lagi filem komik yang memenangi Best Picture walaupun mereka semakin meningkat naik di dalam pencalonan Oscar. Tahun lalu, Black Panther memenangi tiga Oscar dan dicalonkan dalam tujuh kategori.
Thriller satirical Korea Selatan Parasite pula berjaya mendapat enam pencalonan, termasuk untuk pengarah terbaik, filem terbaik dan filem terbaik antarabangsa.
Jojo Rabbit, kisah seorang budak lelaki yang kawan khayalannya adalah Adolf Hitler, muncul sebagai pencabar yang tidak dijangka, dengan enam pencalonan.
Scarlett Johansson, yang masih belum pernah dicalonkan untuk Oscar, bertanding untuk dua trofi: Aktres terbaik untuk Marriage Story dan Pelakon Pembantu Terbaik untuk “Jojo Rabbit.”
